From student assistant to advisor: Thomas's journey at Flux Partners
At Flux Partners, we believe in the power of growth and personal development. No story illustrates this better than that of Thomas Grolleman, who began as a student assistant and has since advanced to the role of advisor, now actively contributing to our expansion in Copenhagen!
A great start
Thomas began his adventure at Flux Partners in 2017 as a student assistant. “It was the ideal part-time job,” says Thomas. “I could schedule my working hours flexibly, which fit perfectly with my civil engineering studies at TU Delft.” During his time as a student assistant, Thomas did everything from administrative tasks to learning the ins and outs of tender management and project management. This versatility provided him with a strong foundation for his future career.
Personal and professional adventures
After graduating, Thomas returned to Flux, where he could apply his technical background in tender management. Thomas has worked on various projects with contractors, ranging from hydraulic engineering and road construction to underground cable systems. “You encounter different types of contractors and project environments, which makes every day different,” Thomas explains.
One of the standout projects Thomas was involved in was the tender for one of the largest offshore wind projects in the Netherlands. Later, when it was announced that Flux Partners planned to expand to Denmark, Thomas knew it right away. “When I heard that Flux wanted to open an office in Copenhagen to explore this market, I knew I wanted to be a part of it,” Thomas explains.
A bike journey to Copenhagen
In July 2024, Thomas continued his adventure by moving to Copenhagen to actively help set up the new Flux Partners office. What made it even more special was that Thomas chose to make the journey by bike. “It was a great way to make the transition and mentally prepare myself for this new chapter,” he says with a smile. Thomas is an avid cyclist; he even biked from the Netherlands to China. “I had been working at Flux for a while, but I always had the plan to embark on a significant journey. So, in April 2022, I took six months to bike from the Netherlands to China.”
Building a new office
Upon arriving in Copenhagen, Thomas found himself in a dynamic environment, with a team that consisted of people already living in Denmark. “It was a challenge, but also an opportunity,” he explains. “I had to support the team with my experience from the Netherlands while also helping establish a new office and setting up processes. From business development and ordering monitor screens to preparing for a trade fair in Hamburg. Every day brings new tasks and opportunities.”
Thomas’s involvement in setting up the Copenhagen office and his role in exploring the renewable energy market are crucial to Flux Partners’ expansion in the Nordics. His experience with the Dutch tender process is invaluable in the international landscape.
The family atmosphere at Flux
At Flux Partners, we place great value on a close-knit and supportive work environment. Thomas describes the atmosphere at Flux as having a “family feel.” “The team at Flux really feels like a second family,” he says. “The support and flexibility I’ve received throughout my career development are unparalleled.”
This family feeling is reflected in various aspects of working at Flux, from team outings that foster strong bonds between colleagues, an open culture where everyone can easily communicate and share ideas and to the personal involvement of leaders in the career development of their employees. Thomas, for instance, recalls how he received regular support and encouragement from his colleagues during his bike trip from the Netherlands to China, who kept up with his adventures. “At Flux, you never feel alone,” says Thomas. “You get the space to follow your own path, but always with the support of a close-knit team behind you.”
Work-life balance
One of the things Thomas particularly appreciates about his role at Flux is the balance between work and personal life. The flexibility he was accustomed to as a student assistant is something he has also found in his current role. “I now have the time to exercise, explore new things, and integrate into Copenhagen’s culture.” Thomas has even started learning Danish in the evenings. Additionally, he has taken up new sports like padel and hockey and is preparing for a marathon.
