Hollandse Kust West: one step closer to climate neutrality

Renewable energy is indispensable if the objective of the Netherlands is to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. One effective way to generate renewable energy is by establishing offshore wind farms. The Dutch government, in its Offshore Wind Roadmap, expresses the ambition to have approximately 21 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity installed by 2030.

Hollandse Kust West (HKW) is one of the wind farms realizing this ambition. Covering an area of approximately 176 km2, the future wind farm will be located 53 kilometers off the Dutch west coast and will have a capacity of 1,400MW of renewable energy. Tender and sustainability advisors from Flux Partners were involved in a consortium during the tender phase to draft the quality documents.

HKW consists of two sites: HKW VI and HKW VII. Each site focuses on the challenges during the construction and operation of offshore wind farms:

For site VI: the impact of a wind farm on ecology. For site VII: the integration of the generated electricity into the Dutch energy grid. Together with leading experts in the industry, we prepared a diverse set of plans. For site VI, we primarily described the innovations and investments we offer to contribute to biodiversity and ecology. For site VII, we outlined the innovations and investments we provide to integrate the generated energy into the Dutch energy grid as efficiently as possible, taking into account grid congestion and short- and long-term energy supply and demand variations. For both sites, we also described how we ensure the certainty of wind farm realization throughout the entire chain and provided a summary of our plans for the construction, operation, and decommissioning of the wind farm.
